Title: Penny On The Floor

Rating: PG-13, if that.
Pairing: Nick/Jeff
Spoilers: None.
Summary: Jeff and Nick have a fight
Notes: Okay, so this is actually a small part of what is turning out to be a pretty big universe, which, once it's finished, will be posted. I've posted snippets of it to my tumblr account here, and here. (There's a brief overview of the plot of the universe in my rambling here, which I recommend you read first. It's slightly crazy.)
Anyway, this is set at some point in the future after they've started working at Lulu's Noodles and the bead shop. This is also a paper-thin excuse to have Jeff sing one of my favorite songs from the Clarks. (Link to the song Jeff sings is here. It's "Penny On The Floor" by the Clarks.)
It was a stupid fight that had started over what to watch on TV, of all things. Jeff wanted to watch the football game that was on (the Steelers were five-for-five this season and Jeff was anxious to see how they'd fair against the Patriots) and Nick wanted to watch “Live Free or Die Hard”, which was also on. They argued about it. Loudly.
It devolved quickly into a shouting match which involved a lot of unfounded accusations about things that were bullshit (Jeff accused Nick of flirting with the guy he worked with at the bead store and Nick accused Jeff of sleeping with the girl he worked with at the noodle shop, and it got worse).
It ended when Nick left, grabbing his coat and shouting that he'd be at his grandparents' house. Jeff shouted back that he could stay there for all he cared.
When the door slammed shut and Jeff realized what happened, he sighed and sank down to the floor, burying his face in his hands.
They didn't fight like that often. They argued once in a while, but they always settled it before it could turn into a fight. They'd only fought like that once, and that was back before they'd gotten together.
Jeff sighed and pulled Nick's guitar over to him from where it was leaning against the wall. After taking a moment to remember how it went, he started playing.
“There's a penny on the floor and you're gone. The television's on. Have you found another man to take my place?” Jeff sang, trying to remember the chords and focusing on something other than his boyfriend. “There's a penny on the floor and I'm wise. I try to see in your eyes, but all I see is a reflection of my face.”
Unbeknownst to Jeff, Nick didn't actually go. He slammed the door, but he couldn't make himself walk down the stairs and out to the car. When Jeff started singing, Nick smiled. Jeff had gotten him hooked on the Clarks not long after they'd first met and “Penny On The Floor” was his favorite song.
“There's a penny on the floor and you're gone. I'm trying to right what's wrong. A stronger man might do it with more grace. There's a penny on the floor and I'm wise. I look up to the skies. I cry and pray and I stare out into space.”
“There's a penny on the floor and you're standing at the door. Turn around and say good-bye. A person like you comes around just once a life.” Jeff continued playing, but stopped singing. He didn't need to, anyway, because Nick opened the door and came in, singing the next couple lines.
“There's a penny on the floor and I'm strong. I try to carry on, realizing no one can take your place.” Nick stepped all the way in when he realized Jeff wasn't going to throw something at him. “So, this was kind of a stupid fight. I didn't mean what I said, by the way. I'm sorry.” He offered, smiling slightly.
“I'm sorry, too. I really didn't mean anything I said. It was stupid of me.” Jeff smiled back and Nick grinned. “Are we okay, then?”
“Yeah, we're okay, I think.” Nick walked over and helped Jeff up. “Is this my guitar?” He mock-glared at Jeff, who laughed. “So, who won the game?”
“I totally forgot to look.” He admitted, shrugging. “I had other things on my mind. You sure we're okay?” Nick nodded and Jeff grinned before ducking his head and kissing Nick.
